Meeting

 

1.         CALL MEETING TO ORDER

President Marcia Kampling called the meeting to order at 7:00 pm.  Members present were Jarrod Bartlett, Brandt Ditgen, Jason Gregory, Rusty Slusser and Matt Voth.  Member absent was Van Dewey.  Also present were David Grover, Superintendent; Greg Rosenhagen, CHS Principal; Amy Wallace, CMS Principal; Sherri Conrad, CES Principal; Jodi Grover, CCR Director; Todd Hague, Activities Director; Lori Kutilek, Director of Teaching and Learning and Dawn Hampel, Board Clerk.

 

2.         PUBLIC FORUM

            No patrons were present.

 

3.         APPROVAL OR REVISION OF AGENDA

            It was moved by Jason Gregory and seconded by Brandt Ditgen to approve the agenda as           presented.  Motion carried   6-0

 

4.         APPROVAL OF CONSENT AGENDA

            It was moved by Rusty Slusser and seconded by Jarrod Bartlett to approve the consent agenda    with the addition of donations.  Motion carried   6-0

·         Minutes of November 14, 2016 Special & Regular Meeting

·         Payment of Bills

·         Payment of Bond Bills

·         December 14, 12:00 pm, USD 268 will host Cheney Chamber of Commerce mtg @ CHS

·         December 22, 1:00 pm, Celebrate Education in Cheney Concert

·         January 9, 6:00 pm, for Master Planning with DLR Group

·         January 15, 5:00 pm, Board Appreciation Dinner

·         Cheney Methodist Women’s – donation to Student Assistance Fund

·         Pathways Church – donation to Cheney Elementary School

 

            It was moved by Rusty Slusser and seconded by Brandt Ditgen to reaffirm the cost of the band     uniforms in the amount of $45,000 and the design that was discussed at the September 12    meeting.  Motion carried  6-0

 

5.         BOND PROJECT UPDATE

            Superintendent Grover shared with the Board the progress on the Baseball / Softball Concession stand.  At this point they are installing the interior sheetrock.  He previously had a meeting with Randy Coonrod and Brad Rice of Coonrod & Assoc.  Items discussed were:

·         tile

·         electrical issues

·         FB field scoreboard

·         MS gym lights

·         ES BB goal adjusters

·         Cornejo following up with parking concrete repairs

·         Seeders, Inc following up with reseeding in some areas

 

6.         SCIENCE PROJECT PRESENTATION

            HS Science teacher Teague and student Matthew Slusser presented the Board with plans for an outdoor exploration area.  The area would be a colabortation of Nature, Science and Art for Pre-K             – 12.  The area would incorporate:

·         Science, Art and Music areas

·         A Garden of Education focusing on native plants

·         Study on Nature Deficit Disorder

·         making nature more accessible

 

7.         PRESENTATION ON CLASSIFICATION PROPOSAL

            Greg Rosenhagen informed the Board that the KSHSAA Executive Board have been working for over a year on restructuring the classification plan.  They have been examining the current     system and are considering alterations.  They will have a formal vote in the Spring of 2017.

 

8.         PRESENTATION ON TECHNOLOGY PLAN / COMMITTEE

            Brad Buscher, Technology Director, discussed:

·         the iPad 2’s could no longer be updated

·         looking at replacing the server stack

·         looking in to getting ChromeBooks, probably with a test group

 

9.         LEADERSHIP REPORTS

            Superintendent’s Report:

·         discussed the Rose Standards – Strategic Planning / Goal Areas / Outcomes

 

            CHS Principal’s Report:

·         Band Concert

·         Vocal concert next Monday

·         the glee clubs went caroling

·         Art Show was last week

·         League Hononr Band & Concert – January 14

·         Finals start Friday – Tuesday

·         Douglass and Belle Plaine will be staying in our league next year

 

            CMS Principal’s Report:

·         upcoming basketball tournament

·         CMS Christmas Talent Show

 

            CES Principal’s Report:

·         3rd grade music concert

·         5th-12th grade band concert

·         Christmas Assembly on December 21st at 1:00 pm CES East gym

·         Bond Project – manual / electric goals in the gym and the CES sign

·         Curriculum goals for CES 1st semester – AimsWeb Plus (math and reading) Revise Pathways Implementation, Take Flight

·         Benchmark testing taking place

·         Mindfulness being taught in classrooms with teachers’ present

·         Curriculum goals for CES 2nd semester – STEM (robots, coding), Guided Reading, Relationships - discipline

 

            Activities Director’s Report:

·         MS Basketball Season nearing end

·         Cardinal Classic finished

·         CPL HOA Basketball Challenge this week

·         Bowling tryouts complete

·         League update – Belle Plaine and Douglass

·         Baseball pitch count rule in effect per KSHSAA

·         HS basketball season getting started

·         State Debate – next month

·         Culinary Arts Class served the food for the Cardinal Classic Hospitality Room

 

            CCR Director’s Report:

·         VEX Robotics Grant

·         ITEEA Conference Speakers

·          Student Gallup Poll Results

·         National Student Clearinghouse Data & Purpose

 

            Teaching and Learning Director’s Report:

·         Hour of Code for National Computer Science Week

·         Robots

 

10.        BOE REPORTS

            Marcia Kampling, Rusty Slusser and Matt Voth attended the KASB Convention the weekend of

            December 3rd.  They attended workshops on:

·         School building safety

·         College and Career seminar

·         Board governance guide discussion

·         Communicating your districts message

·         Superintendent’s evaluation information

·         Embracing failure

·         reunification strategies

·         retention of quality teachers

·         e-Walk through observation tools

·         energy conservation program

·         Food Service savings

·         Twitter and schools

·         Free speech rights as a BOE member

 

            Matt Voth also updated the Board on the Special Education meeting he attended in November.

 

11.        EXECUTIVE SESSION

            At 10:25 pm Matt Voth moved, seconded by Jarrod Bartlett, that the Board enter into executive     session to discuss personal matters of non-elected personnel to      protect the privacy interests of   the individual(s) to be discussed because if this matter were discussed in open session it might             invade the privacy of those discussed and that the Board return to open session in this room at                                       11:05 pm.  Motion carried   6-0    (Present were   BOE members and the Superintendent)

 

The Board resumed open session at 11:05 pm.

 

12.        APPROVAL OF JOB OFFERINGS / RESIGNATIONS

            It was moved by Jason Gregory and seconded by Matt Voth to approve the following personnel    changes:                  Motion carried  6-0

           

            Resignation:

            Lela Krenzel      CES Assistant Cook

            Change:

            Heather Berry    change from CES Dishwasher to CES Assistant Cook

            Hiring:

            Shelly Webster  CES Dishwasher

            It was moved by Jason Gregory and seconded by Rusty Slusser to approve the extension of        David Grover’s contract until June 30, 2019.   Motion carried   6-0

 

13.        ADJOURNMENT

            President Marcia Kampling adjourned the meeting at 11:06 pm.
