Minutes

 

 

1.         CALL MEETING TO ORDER

President Marcia Kampling called the meeting to order at 7:01 pm.  Members present were Jarrod Bartlett, Van Dewey, Brandt Ditgen, Jason Gregory, Rusty Slusser and Matt Voth.    Also present were David Grover, Superintendent; Greg Rosenhagen, CHS Principal; Sherri Conrad, CES Principal; Jodi Grover, CCR Director; Todd Hague, Activities Director; Lori Kutilek, Director of Teaching and Learning; Brad Buscher, Technology Director; Ashley Evans, Reading Specialist and Dawn Hampel, Board Clerk.

           

2.         PUBLIC FORUM

Darren Hillman addressed the Board regarding the MS and HS Wrestling Programs.  He is greatly supportive of the programs and would like to see the District take them to another level.  At this time, Cheney does not have the proper equipment to host any home meets.

 

3.         APPROVAL OR REVISION OF AGENDA

It was moved by Jason Gregory and seconded by Matt Voth to approve the agenda as amended with the deletion of Item 8. C&A Construction Project Update as Brad Rice was unable to attend the meeting.  Motion carried  6-0

 

4.         APPROVAL OF CONSENT AGENDA

It was moved by Rusty Slusser and seconded by Jarrod Bartlett to approve the consent agenda as presented:                         Motion carried  6-0

 

·         Minutes of September 12, 2016 Regular Meeting

·         Payment of Bills

·         Payment of Bond Bills

·         November 8th District Site Council Meeting – 7:00 pm CHS Library

·         November 14th meet with DLR Group rep. for Master Plan – 6:00 pm

·         KASB Convention (December 2-4), finalize Strategic Plan

 

5.         CMS SOCIAL STUDIES STUDENT PRESENTATION

CMS Social Studies teacher Jill Weber and four of her students, Noah Davis, Owen Hague, Morgan Sutter and Reece Keller, gave a class presentation on the unit they just completed about Archeology.  They gave a Power Point demonstration on the steps of how a “dig” would be conducted and shared with the Board the “treasures” they found in their mock dig.

           

Van Dewey arrived at 7:15 pm during Item 5.

 

6.         FINANCIAL AUDITOR’S FYE 2016 REPORT

Greg Reimer from Busy, Ford and Reimer, LLC presented his auditor’s report to the Board for the 2015-2016 fiscal year.

It was moved by Jason Gregory and seconded by Brandt Ditgen to approve the EOY 2016 Auditor’s report.    Motion carried  7-0

 

7.         DEB SHEPARD HOUSE DISTRICT 93 INTRODUCTION

Deb Shepard stopped by the meeting and introduced herself to the BOE as a candidate running for the House of Representatives for the 93rd District.

 

8.         C & A CONSTRUCTION PROJECT UPDATE

            This item was cancelled for this evening.

 

9.         WONDER WALL DEMONSTRATION

Brad Buscher gave a demonstration of the 135” Promethean Active Wall.  It uses Class Flow to allow anyone to present with or without having their own device.   This Interactive Whiteboard is capable of allowing up to four users at one time.

 

10.        LEADERSHIP REPORTS

            Superintendent’s Report:

·         Update on construction projects

 

            CHS Principal’s Report:

·         Update on Auditorium upgrades

·         Update on the Culinary Arts program

·         P/T conferences review

·         Update on band uniforms at the November meeting

·         Update on the Classification Study Committee progress

 

CES Principal’s Report:

·         Upcoming Events:

1.     October 15 – Fun Run and Pumpkin Palooza sponsored by PALS

2.     October 23 – Counselor’s Family Event – Get A Move On

3.     Oct 24 & 25 – Parent / Teacher Conferences

4.     October 26 –Former KU walk-on Author Scott Novosel visiting

·         October 6 was the 5th Grade Music Program

·         Making changes in IEP meetings

·         Jump Rope for Heart coming up

·         Working on monitoring attendance

·         Attended a grant writing workshop

·         Introduced Ziggedy – an on-line shopping website that donates to schools

·         Working on a re-organization of the CES Reading Program

 

Activities Director’s Report:

·         NFHS (National Federation of High Schools) Activities Week

·         MS Volleyball teams both undefeated in league play – hosting league tourney

·         MS Football – they are league champs and both A & B teams are undefeated

·         MS / HS Cross Country League is this week – Regionals at Lake Afton

·         HS Girls Golf is League Runner-Up – Regional and State coming up

·         HS Volleyball is ranked #1 in 3A – we host sub-state on Oct 22

·         HS Football team is 5-1 headed into District play - key games coming up

·         Debate season has started

·         HS School Play is Nov 11 and 12 – Dr. Seuss’s rendition of Romeo and Juliet

 

Teaching and Learning Director’s Report:

Director Lori Kutilek and Reading Specialist Ashley Evans presented:

·         Reading instruction for Pre-K – 2 and the data at CES

·         Reviewed the Multi-Tiered System of Support for the reading program

1.     Identifying the students’ needs

2.     Identifying the gaps in instruction

3.     Working on filling in those gaps with programs such as Take Flight

 

CCR Director’s Report:

·         Career & Technical Enrollment – 16 Pathways

·         SB155 - $56,672.75

·         Test Fest for 9th – 11th grades on Oct 19th – Seniors Job Shadow

·         Internship / Job Shadows (Project Management & Resource Scheduling, Care of Athletes, Community Connections)

·         Individual Plan of Study (Career Cruising, Student-Led Conferences)

·         ACT Prep class

·         Edgenuity (recovery, hybrid/blended learning, curriculum)

Grammar, Health, Computer Apps, ACT prep, Science, Chinese, German

·         Career Expo – All Juniors / Seniors – Hutchinson Mall on November 15

·         Senior trip to WATC / Newman / WSU

·         Edgenuity by Design in the CMS

 

11.        BOE REPORTS

Marcia Kampling attended the September Special Education Coop Board meeting on September 15th.  Regarding the Mt. Hope building, the Cooperative has been authorized to lease it and at that time, the chiller had gone out.

 

12.        EXECUTIVE SESSION

At 9:50 pm Van Dewey moved, seconded by Jarrod Bartlett, that the Board enter into executive session to discuss personal matters of non-elected personnel to protect the privacy interests of the individual(s) to be discussed because if this matter were discussed in open session it might invade the privacy of those discussed and that the Board return to open session in this room at                                10:15 pm.  Motion carried  7-0     (Present were BOE members and the Superintendent)

 

The Board resumed open session at 10:15 pm.

 

13.        APPROVAL OF JOB OFFERINGS / RESIGNATIONS

It was moved by Jason Gregory and seconded by Jarrod Bartlett to approve the resignation of Pam Day as bus driver.  Motion carried   7-0

 

It was moved by Jarrod Bartlett and seconded by Brandt Ditgen to hire Michael Quick as HS Head Baseball Coach for the 2016-17 school term.  Motion carried   7-0

 

14.        ADJOURNMENT

            President Marcia Kampling adjourned the meeting at 10:16 pm.
