USD 268 Wellness Committee Meeting

October 3, 2014

3:30 p.m.

Committee Members Present:


Lori Heger, from Maize Middle School led the group as a Wellness Coach.  She advised the group that we would be looking at our current wellness policy, where we are at on it, where we need to go, and to share success stories.

Wellness Committee meets twice a year.  Minutes are posted on the school website in the Wellness Corner news.

Charlene  Lyons stated that this year is the three year review.

Below is a list of wellness projects that the district is currently providing:

·        Middle School (6,7,8) Nutrition Unit

·        High School  Fruit and Vegetable Grant

·        High School  Healthy Snack Unit in Health classes

·        District  Get A Move On Day, October 26 (run,walk, bikes)

·        Counselors  Monthly family activity

·        Wellness Corner  Charlene posts every other month

·        Elementary  Walking Bus with KDOT/sidewalks grant

·        Elementary  Power Panther Pals

·        Faculty  Golf outing in May

·        Middle School  Nutrition & Wellness Module

·        High School  Nutrition & Wellness classes


Challenges for the Wellness Committee:

·        Time for the committee to meet

·        Walking Bus:  Challenge to get the parents on board in the mornings


Areas to look at:

·        Physical Activities in the district

·        Nutrition Education in place

·        Food Service:  Smart snacks, ala cart, vending machines.


Exempt fundraisers:

1 Semester is how we are tracking

1 exempt (Project Prom in March has a Chili Feed)


Off Site Assessment Tools:

Heidi Wells will be meeting with Charlene Lyons to explain.

November review.

Smart Snack review.


Lori Heger stated that she will be our review person for the next three years. 

She suggested that we take a look at our current policy, and choose one area to focus on and work on.
