Research shows that moving to a new school can be a very stressful experience for children. We want to meet these children early on, deal with the grief issues, and try to prevent problems in adjustment by working with them to help them fit in. We like to make students who come to Cheney Elementary during the year feel welcome. In addition, we’d like to help them develop some attachment to their new surroundings.
We implement a Bee Buddy program in grades K-2. The Bee Buddies meet and greet the new students. They assist them with routines and procedures and introduce the new students to others in their classes.
We have a student ambassador program in grades 3-5. Cardinal Ambassadors meet and greet new students and introduce them to teachers and students. The ambassadors eat lunch with new students and greet them in the mornings for at least a week.
